Description

Our project (funded by the NIJ  Award# 2019-75-CX-K001aims to revolutionize the reentry process for justice-involved individuals (JII) by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies. The centerpiece of our endeavor is the Support and Monitoring System for Community Supervision (SMS4CS), a cutting-edge platform designed to assist JII and their dedicated case managers in their journey to reintegrate seamlessly into the community. While our primary focus is on JII, we recognize the critical role played by case managers.

The SMS4CS was conceived to be a multifaceted tool that provides case managers with early warning indicators of risky behavior and equips JII with the means and strategies to mitigate these risks, aligning with best practices in hybrid supervision. At its core, our system is committed to delivering personalized resources and opportunities to JII, complementing the support offered by case managers. To facilitate this, JII is provided with a smartphone and a tracking/health-related wearable device (smartwatch).

The heart of the SMS4CS lies in its intelligent data analytics and algorithms, which unburden case managers and empower JII by offering tailored support and guidance. The system comprises several key components, each serving a unique purpose:

SMS4CS is the overarching framework of our system. It is designed to provide additional motivation to a rehabilitation intervention called the 5-Key Model. The primary audience for SMS4CS is JII, who are rebuilding their lives, relationships, and careers following incarceration and case managers working with the JII.

GOALS App:

The GOALS app serves as the interface through which JII can use smartphones to engage with the SMS4CS system. It grants them access to assigned tasks, assessments, sessions, and meetings set by their case managers through the SMS4CS Dashboard system.

Health App:

The Health app establishes a connection with an external smartwatch to monitor the vital signs of JII, ensuring their physical well-being during the reentry process.

Dashboard:

The Dashboard system complements the GOALS app by empowering case managers to monitor and analyze the extensive data generated by JII and identified by SMS4CS efficiently. Its primary objective is enabling case managers to oversee JII's progress in their Five Key activities, manage appointments, and explore their daily data from the app.

Our technology represents a groundbreaking effort to enhance the support system for JII during their reentry into the community, transforming their transition into a smoother and more successful journey. SMS4CS, with its various components, is poised to make a significant impact in the field of criminal justice and rehabilitation.
