What is a data management plan?

A data management plan is written at the beginning of a research proposal or project to document how the data that are produced by the research will be collected, archived, and shared. Many funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation require data management plans in grant proposals.

For resources on data management planning and funder requirements, see our Data Management Plan page.
